Njl Direct Roof felt Adhesive 5L

NJL Felt Adhesive is a black, cold applied bonding adhesive. It is formulated with a flexible oxidised bitumen to provide excellent adhesion between roofing felt and various roofing substrates such as asphalt, metal, concrete and wood. For an aesthetic finish it can also be used for bonding mineral chippings to bituminous surfaces. Features - Water resistant - Brush or squeegee on - High bond strength. Uses - Bonding roof felts - Bonding chipping to bituminous surfaces - Sealing roofing felt laps.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

APPLICATION All surfaces should be smooth, clean, dry, sound and free from frost, oil, grease, condensation and other contamination. Remove any organic growth with a fungicidal wash as may be necessary. For enhanced adhesion dusty or porous surfaces (such as concrete) it is recommended to prime with NJL Bitumen Primer and allow to fully dry before applying the product.

The minimum ambient temperature for application is 10°C and the maximum temperature is 25°C, it is not recommended to apply the product at temperatures below or above these values; the viscosity of the product is highly temperature sensitive. Product is recommended to be brush, mop or squeegee applied. Should the product require thinning, it is recommended to thin 5% by volume of white spirit initially and evaluate the resulting viscosity.

The product should not need to be thinned if recommended storage conditions have been maintained. This product should not be used with or over tar based products, if unsure contact the Technical Department about how you can identify your roofing substrate.

Coverage rates: Roofing felt adhesive: 0.6 – 0.8 litres/m2 Gritting bonding: 10mm chippings 1.0 litres/m2 , 3mm chippings: 0.75 litres/m2

Instructions for use:

Apply the product to the roof area with a squeegee, mop or stiff brush in accordance with the above listed coverage rates. The adhesive should be left open to the elements for a period of 15-45 minutes (depending on temperature) until it becomes “tacky” to the touch. The felt should then be placed into the wet/tacky adhesive carefully. Once placed roll down on each felt section to push out air and create maximum contact of felt to adhesive. For improved adhesion weight the felt down in strategic areas until the full drying process is complete. Overlaps Laps at the edges should be min. 75mm wide and laps at roll ends should be min. 150mm wide. Laps must be sealed on the underside with adhesive.

Timber Roofs

Timber roofs should have the first layer of felt nailed down with galvanised clout head nails, the following felt layers (2nd and/or 3rd layer should be bonded with this product. This product can be used to bond laps on single layer applications. Ensure area to form lap is completely coated with adhesive and press firmly to expel air when tacky. The lap should then be nailed with galvanised clout head nails to secure bond.

Gritting bonding Do not use this product if the slope of the roof exceeds 10°.

Spread the adhesive evenly over as large a working area as possible. Apply the chippings immediately into the wet adhesive. Ensure the chipping cover is not over liberal, aim for shoulder-to-shoulder coverage but not excess. Leave the surfaced area for at least 48-72 hours before lightly brushing off excess chippings with a stiff brush. There should be no black areas left exposed, fill in any areas as needed by repeating the process locally.

Metal

If applying to metal, ensure the surface is well prepared in advance. Wire brush off any rust and ensure clean and dry. Cleaning For cleaning tools use a hydrocarbon-based solvent such as white spirit. Xylene (industrial thinners), toluene and acetone are also effective.

REGULATORY All components are REACH (Reg. (EC) No 1907/2006) registered. The product does not contain any Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

TOXICITY AND SAFETY Product is classified as hazardous according to the CLP Regulation (Reg. (EC) No 1272/2008). Refer to the Product Safety Data Sheet for recommended safety precautions. It is recommended the end user wear safety glasses, safety gloves and protective clothing during application.

HANDLING AND STORAGE Store in cool, dry conditions in the original manufacturer packaging. Do not store with oxidisers and keep away from sources of ignition. The product has a 36-month shelf life provided the container is unopened. If opened the product should be used within 3 months and sealed air-tight between uses. Longer storage times may result in the bitumen dropping out of solution to the base of the container, rigorous and thorough stirring is therefore essential prior to application.
