METHOD OF USE
BITUMEN MASTIC may be applied to surfaces which are dry or damp but not wet or water-logged. Apply by trowel or putty knife.
USES
BITUMEN MASTIC is a non-slumping bitumen compound which provides an effective seal between most roofing materials. It is used for general waterproofing and sealing repairs; sealing cracks, holes and joints either as a finish or before the application of other materials and for remedial work before the application of Flashband.
* Filling cracks and fissures - in concrete, roofing felt, asphalt, lead, zinc, corrugated asbestos- cement, steel, masonry and renderings.
* Joint-sealing in gutters, spouts, down-pipes, between corrugated asbestos-cement and iron sheetings, around skylights and pre-cast concrete units.
* Bedding tiles, slates and flashings in position.
BITUMEN MASTIC may be applied to surfaces which are dry or damp but not wet or water-logged. Apply by trowel or putty knife.
PREPARATION
Ensure that all surfaces are free from loose debris, dirt and grease. All traces of algae and fungi growth should be removed using a stiff bristled brush. Where algae and fungi have been present, the surface should be treated with Fungicide, in order to kill any remaining spores, thereby discouraging the return of the growths.
Crack Filling
Shallow cracks and fissures are simply filled and smoothed over and left slightly proud at the centre. Deep cracks should be filled in consecutive layers, each being firmly compacted by trowel and again finally left slightly proud at the centre.
Joint Sealant
If possible, the materials at the joint (eg. on lead or zinc sheeting) should be pulled back and the surface thoroughly cleaned using a stiff bristled brush. The BITUMEN MASTIC is trowelled over the surface to a depth of 6mm (1/4”) and the joint materials re-bedded into it.
Bedding
Where loose slates, tiles, flashings etc, are to be re-bedded they should first be removed and cleaned thoroughly with a stiff bristled brush.
BITUMEN MASTIC is then applied in a 40mm (11/2”) bead around the top and side edges, before the tiles, slates etc. are replaced, positioned and secured by being pressed firmly into the BITUMEN MASTIC.
CLEANING OF TOOLS
Tools may be cleaned after use with White Spirit or paraffin.
STORAGE
If stored in a cool, dry place in original unopened containers, the shelf life is 24 months.
HEALTH & SAFETY
BITUMEN MASTIC contains petroleum bitumens and solvent and is classified as flammable. Avoid skin or eye contact. Please refer to the relevant Health and Safety Data Sheet for detailed information regarding the safe handling of this product.
